District Emergency Organisations
Volunteers are a gift to the community.
The DEO is the volunteer arm of the Department of Emergency Management. Thirty district organisations across Barbados organise and coordinate community resources to enable an effective response in times of crisis.
About the DEO
THE VOLUNTEER ARM OF DEM
The District Emergency Organisation works with the community to develop and operationalise disaster prevention and preparedness programmes to lessen the impact of identified hazards such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, fires, aircraft and vehicular accidents. DEOs are increasingly involved in the fight against environmental hazards such as love vine and the Giant African Snail.
DEOs reach out to all groups in the community — churches, service clubs, neighbourhood watches, PTAs, skilled artisans, families, community groups and NGOs — and work closely with the Fire Service, Police and other government agencies serving the district.

Structure
HOW A DEO IS ORGANISED
Each DEO is operated by volunteers drawn from the community it serves. The management structure covers the following roles — general members become involved in the areas that most interest them.

DEOs provide a forum for community-level education and training, act as the first mechanism for local emergency response, and lead damage assessment, needs analysis and relief distribution after an event.
